Scottish Winter Climbing

During our mountaineering courses you will learn to operate safely in the winter hills, efficient rope work, navigation and how to climb ice. Scottish winter Mountaineering courses generally are for walkers, with some sumer experience, looking to climb easy ridges and gulies to Scottish summits. To make this switch to winter walkers need to learn a series of new skills.

  • Cramponing
  • Use of Ice axe to stop, with ice axearresting, and as a climbing axe.
  • Basic use of a rope going up a slop and down a steep snow gully.
  • Abseiling
  • Snow belays
  • Navigation in winter.

Scottish Winter Climbing
Who hasn’t stood below the North Face of Ben Nevis and marvelled at the long classic ice routes on Ben Nevis. Historic climbs like Green Gully, Point 5, Zero Gully, Smiths Route, Orion Face, Minus Gullies not to mention the ultimate Winter Ridge Climb ‘ToWer Ridge’. Climbing these long routes takes fitness and speed. As Guides we add the difference in slickness to make a memorable ascent of one of these climbs possible, for the average climber. Guiding Big routes is what Guides do best!.
Scottish climbing courses can alloew the rock climber to learn the craft of the winter climber, develop their own avalanche skills and all the different types of anchors needed in winter. Ice climbing and mixed skills are essential tools to make ascents of Scottish routes. Not only to Guides work on Ben Nevis but all over Scotland including:
